Duke Energy and Piedmont Natural Gas combined have committed to invest over $2.5 Billion dollars to building a 550 mile natural gas pipeline. A total of $5 Billion has been proposed for this project. The new pipeline will extend from West Virginia to Southeastern North Carolina.
“[the pipeline] will provide a backbone of economic development opportunity with the potential siting of large, energy intensive manufacturing or industrial facilities.” – Tom Skains, Piedmont CEO
Dominion Resources has been engaged to build and operate the 36-inch, high-pressure pipeline. Dominion says preliminary survey work and route planning have been under way since May and could be completed by year end.
The Wilmington, NC metro area will benefit from the new pipeline as it will spur new industrial and manufacturing opportunities. For more details about Duke energy’s investment visit this link.
